Community Spotlight
Disclaimer: Welcome to our Community Spotlight page! Each month the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council will highlight an individual or organization that supports the youth in our community. So this page is dedicated to those who give of themselves or services and take the initiative to improve our community for years to come. So this month, we would like to highlight the East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library at Goodwood!
The East Baton Rouge Parish Library
The Teen Room at the new Main Library is an enclosed section, with a veritable hive of activity. Since opening their doors 7 months ago, over 25,000 tweens teens and parents have come in to check them out. They have it all: computers, laptop bar, comfy chairs and even vending machines (to fire up those synapses in preparation for some serious homework time!) EBR Main Library also has three study rooms; group study and collaboration happens here! Once a semester, they host ACT/SAT practice tests and their teen programming room can accommodate up to 50 test takers.
But all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, so EBRPL kicks their programming room into overdrive and cranks up the volume! They have gaming (Minecraft, Halo, Super Smash, Madden) board games galore, DIY crafts, author visits and goofy team play like Fear Factor or Minute to Win It. From January through August, Main’s Teen Room has hosted 81 programs with more than 1,500 tweens and teens participating. Go see what’s happening in the coolest room in town.
Mission Statement: “The mission of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library is to serve all of the residents of the parish as an educational, informational, recreational, and cultural center through a wide variety of resources, services, and programs.”
Vision Statement: “The Library contributes to the quality of life, enjoyment, enlightenment, and economic vitality of our diverse and dynamic community.”
